Description:

· to ensure that vessel stability and hull bending moment and shear force criteria are not exceeded.

· to ensure that project activities do not compromise the structural integrity of the vessel.

· to ensure that crane lift operations are carried out within the safe working limits of the vessel cranes.

· to ensure that all proposed works to be carried out onboard the vessel which fall within the remit of the

naval architects are carried out to best industry and statutory standards in a safe and cost effectivemanner.

 

key activities

· calculate and give advice/assistance in calculating vessel motions/stability/strength/lifting analysis.

· carry out stability calculations for project teams, maintenance of the vessel stability software and

documentation through the preparation of stability submissions, software models, inclining experiments,displacement checks etc

· carry out calculations to ensure that dock block loading will not compromise the structural integrity of the

vessel.

· carry out structural failure surveys and prepare repair procedures

· undertake structural design calculations to class requirements in support of vessel upgrades and

modifications

· review and approve structural design calculations and proposals for temporary equipment installations

and seafastenings prepared by project teams and 3rd party design consultants

· review and approve deck strength calculation packages prepared by project teams and 3rd party design

consultants

· perform lift analysis calculations for subsea and heavy lift operations

· review & approve lift analysis calculations packages prepared by project personnel and 3rd party design

consultants• authorise heavy lift operations on behalf of ss&s department

 

· liaise with project teams, vessel superintendents, ship personnel and others to provide advice and

guidance on proposed modifications and repairs to company vessels

· work with vessels to provide:

- technical advice- design of vessel modifications and upgrades- advice on stability and other issues• liaise with certification and flag state

 

authorities:- to ensure that proposed vessel modifications meet current and any appropriate future standards- regarding vessel stability and structural alterations

· work with 3rd party suppliers to ensure:

- that sub-contracted design activities are adequately monitored, reviewed, and the results arerecorded.- work with 3rd party fabricators to solve fabrication & installation problems and ensure that finished jobis to best standard of workmanship.

· co-operate with the fms administrator to:

- ensure the accuracy of the technical documentation within the fleet management system

· compliance with the oad management system

· any other duties as required by senior naval architect.

secondary duties and responsibilities:

· to ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with company quality control procedures

· to ensure the maintenance of a filing system directly related to the work undertaken by the naval

architects

· liaison with certification engineer and with drawing office manager to ensure accuracy of

documentation in relation to naval architectural issues• instruction and supervision of graduate entry trainees during their period of training within the ss&s department
